Post-Excavation and Analysis

Turning excavation data into meaningful historical insights.

AC Archaeology and Heritage offers comprehensive post-excavation services to analyse, interpret, and present the findings from archaeological investigations.

Our team initially processes excavated materials including artefacts and environmental samples using specialist techniques, detailed reporting, finds analysis and specialist studies. We ensure that excavation results are thoroughly documented and contribute to the broader understanding of the past.

Post-Excavation Services

Our post-excavation team plays a crucial role in bringing archaeological projects to completion, providing the expert analysis and documentation that turns fieldwork into a lasting record. During this stage, we:

  • Catalogue and process finds recovered from the site.

  • Prepare artefacts for detailed specialist study.

  • Analyse data and information collected during excavation.

  • Compile the comprehensive archaeological archive.

This archive combines physical objects — from pottery, flint tools, and building materials to environmental samples — with site documentation, including drawings, plans, photographs, and descriptive records.

While much of our work stems from our own excavations, we also offer a wide range of post-excavation services to external clients, handling projects of any scale. We manage large and diverse assemblages spanning all periods, from prehistoric through to modern, including Roman and Medieval pottery, metalwork, animal bone, human bone, brick/tiles and more. In-house specialists carry out the majority of analyses, supported by external consultants where required. After analysis, we produce high-quality reports and publications, ensuring findings are accessible to both academic audiences and the wider public. Our outputs appear in our Virtual Exhibit web page, County Historic Environment Records and National academic journals.

Finally, the completed archive is deposited with the relevant local museum and made accessible online via the Archaeology Data Service (ADS), preserving the material for future research, educational use, and public display. This process ensures that the knowledge gained from each project is shared, safeguarded, and made available for generations to come.
