Bronze Age urn goes on display in museum

A Bronze Age urn found by our team is now on display in Devon.

The ceramic pot, loaned by Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, can be seen at Newton Abbot Museum. It was discovered in a ditch on the northern edge of Newton Abbot. The clay used to make it may have come from the nearby River Lemon.

The urn weighs about 15.5kg (2st 6lb). Small traces of bone were found inside, suggesting it may have been used to hold cremated remains.

Museum curator Joanna Eccles said the people who buried the urn were the ancestors of today’s Newton Abbot residents. She explained that because the vessel was found complete, it was likely carefully placed into a cut in the ditch. While the exact reason for its burial is unknown, similar finds at other sites are often thought to have special meaning.

The urn is on display at Newton Abbot Museum from Tuesday to Saturday. Entry is free.
